Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands.

We are accepting applications for our Fall 2019 consent-based courses until September 10! Students at Chicago pursue creative writing within the larger context of academic study.

Several reading courses link two genres such as fiction and poetry, and poetry and drama.

Recognition of Native Lands Statement We would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the original and traditional territory of Tongva people [Tongva and Cahuilla people] and within Tongva, Cahuilla, Luiseño & Serrano original lands and contemporary territories.

The Department of Creative Writing at UCR offers the only Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing in the University of California system and MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts.

It is a growing and dynamic program made up entirely of established writers and José de Piérola (New York: Kernpukt Press, 2018). The Creative Writing Program offers workshop courses in fiction and poetry writing, and sponsors the Barbara & David Zalaznick Reading Series during the academic year. The Lewis Center’s Performance Central series presents the biennial Princeton Poetry Festival drawing poets from around the world. An Emerging Writers series puts thesis students at the podium alongside a lineup of established guest writers curated by seniors in the program. Homes, Jhumpa Lahiri, Christina Lazaridi, Yiyun Li, Paul Muldoon, James Richardson, Kirstin Valdez Quade, Tracy K. Small workshop courses, averaging eight to ten students, provide intensive feedback and instruction for both beginners and advanced writers, and each year 25 to 30 seniors work individually with a member of the faculty on a creative thesis: a novel, a screenplay, or a collection of short stories, poems or translations.Writers of national and international distinction visit campus throughout the year to participate in the Althea Ward Clark W’21 Reading Series and to discuss their work.Nuestro departamento también ofrece una Maestría en Creacíon Literaria en línea. Fabulations is a collection of minimalist short stories that straddle history and fiction, fact and imagination.Además de nustros profesores permanentes, nuestro programa en línea ofrece clases y talleres por reconocidos escritores tales como Heather Hartley, Laurie Ann Guerrero, Natalie Diaz, Liz Sched y Dennis Bush. Click here to find out more about our program, or email our Student Affairs Administrator with questions! While the purpose of the program is, above all, to give students a rigorous background in the fundamentals of creative work by providing them with the opportunity to study with established poets and prose writers, it differs from the professional, free-standing creative writing programs at other universities in seeing itself as an integral part of the university’s intellectual life, and most particularly in providing opportunities for interdisciplinary work.
